How the Heck Do I Work This Thing: Chainsaw Edition Thumbnail image

Whether you are landscaping, handling construction or cutting firewood, chainsaws are great for getting the job done. However, chainsaws can also be difficult and dangerous to use without the right guidance. Knowing how to use a chainsaw and chainsaw safety tips will help you accomplish more and stay safe this fall.

Purchase the Right Protective Gear

Before operating a chainsaw, it’s important to have all of your safety gear ready. Your gear should include hearing protection, a face shield or safety goggles, a chainsaw helmet, heavy-duty gloves, chainsaw chaps or pants and breathable chainsaw boots.

Get Familiar With the Chainsaw

Make sure to read the manual that came with your chainsaw thoroughly. Get familiar with the chainsaw parts, controls and safety measures. Know exactly how to start and stop the chainsaw, as well as specific safety mechanisms like chain brakes and kickback protection.

Prep Your Work Area

A safe environment is vital while operating a chainsaw. Remove debris, tripping hazards and any other obstacles from your work area. Keep bystanders, pets and other potential distractions at a safe distance. Even if you are working in dim conditions, make sure you have good lighting.

Start the Chainsaw

Finally, it is time to start your chainsaw. Place it on a flat surface, engaging the chain brake, and do the following:

For gas chainsaws, prime the engine per the manufacturer’s instructions, set the choke to the starting position, pull the starter cord firmly until the engine ignites and release the choke, letting the engine warm for about a minute before use.

For electric chainsaws, plug into a reliable power source, engage the safety switch and pull the trigger to start the chainsaw motor. Continue holding the trigger switch, check the functionality of the chain brake and disengage that same brake. Now you can begin cutting. When you’re done, release to stop the engine, and stay vigilant while your equipment eases to a halt.

How to Use a Chainsaw

Position your hands properly on the chainsaw and maintain a firm grip. Keep your feet shoulder-width apart and avoid operating above shoulder height. Remember, being overly-cautious while your chainsaw is running is far better than not being cautious enough.

To avoid injury in case of kickback, position your body to the side of the chainsaw. Consider the direction of the fall or cutting path when cutting, and go slowly and carefully. Keep a first aid kit nearby and refresh yourself on how to treat cuts, burns or other injuries. Seek medical help immediately in a severe emergency.

Follow Maintenance Guidelines and Chainsaw Safety

Regularly inspect your chainsaw’s tension, lubrication and air filter, and be sure to fuel the chainsaw in a well-ventilated area away from flames or sparks. Always use the recommended fuel mixture for gas-powered chainsaws. When performing maintenance after use, be sure the chainsaw has had a chance to cool down first.
