Can You Use a Zero-Turn Mower for Snow Clearing? Thumbnail image

One great thing about yard equipment is its versatility. There are a number of machines that, while not technically designed for snow removal, can handle it when push comes to shove.

Today’s big question: can you use a zero-turn mower for snow clearing? The short answer is yes, but there are important considerations to keep in mind.

The Basics of Zero-Turn Mowers

The biggest benefit of zero-turn mowers is right in the name. The turning radius is effectively zero when the two drive wheels rotate in the opposite direction, similar to a tank turning in place.

Primarily, zero-turn mowers are designed for lawn maintenance. Their maneuverability makes them ideal for mowing grass in tight spaces, resulting in a better looking lawn. They come in a wide range of models and feature many comfort options, such as power steering.

Can They Clear Snow?

Technically, yes, zero-turn mowers can be equipped with a snow plow or snow blower attachment.

With the right equipment, a zero-turn mower can push a good amount of snow and save effort on surfaces such as paved driveways. They are highly maneuverable with a powerful engine. If you already own a zero-turn mower, using it for snow clearing can save you the expense of purchasing an additional machine.

Cons of Clearing Snow With a Zero-Turn Mower

Pushing a couple inches of snow with a zero-turn mower is fine, but get much higher than that and you’re setting yourself up for difficulty.

We don’t recommend using a zero-turn mower for larger accumulations of heavy, wet snow, and tackling 5-6’’ or more is pushing it (pun intended). Using a mower for snow clearing can also lead to increased wear and tear on the machine, potentially shortening its lifespan.

Better Options for Snow Clearing

In the Twin Cities, the average snowfall is 54’’, and even higher than that the further you get up north. Because our state experiences such heavy snowfall and icy conditions, investing in dedicated snow removal equipment is recommended over pushing snow with a zero-turn mower.

The first obvious alternative is a snow blower. Their powerful engines and specialized augers are engineered to handle tough snow conditions. We have a variety of snow blowers for sale at Minnesota Equipment, from reputable brands like Toro and Ariens.

If you have a truck or utility vehicle, adding a snow plow attachment can make quick work of large driveways and parking areas. All-terrain vehicles can also be outfitted with snow plow attachments.
